TPE Overmolding on PP
SEBS- and SBS-based TPE-S compounds designed for overmolding on PP substrates, used for grips, handles, buttons
and edge protection in tools, personal care, appliances and consumer products.
These grades offer strong bonding to PP, adjustable hardness from soft cushions to firm grip zones, and surface
feels ranging from high-friction to smoother touch. Suitable for 2-shot molding and insert molding processes.

Applications
TPE overmolding on PP is widely used where a rigid PP body needs a soft, functional grip area:
- Toothbrush and personal-care handles – colored, comfortable grip zones on PP cores.
- Kitchenware and utensil handles – wet-grip performance and anti-slip surfaces.
- Household tools and DIY products – improved ergonomics and comfort on PP handles.
- Appliance knobs and levers – tactile surfaces and scratch protection on PP parts.
- Stationery and office grips – soft, anti-slip areas on PP pens and office tools.

Typical Grades for PP Overmolding
| Grade | Hardness | Key Performance | Surface Feel | Processing | Typical Use |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| TPE-OVM PP 40A Soft | 40A | Very soft cushioning, strong PP adhesion, good flow | Soft, slightly tacky grip | 2-shot / insert | Toothbrush grips, personal-care handles |
| TPE-OVM PP 60A Balance | 60A | Balanced softness and strength, good abrasion | Comfortable, medium-friction | 2-shot / insert | Kitchenware handles, household tools |
| TPE-OVM PP 70A Durable | 70A | Higher mechanical strength, better cut and wear resistance | Firm, grippy surface | 2-shot / insert | Hand tools, DIY and light industrial grips |
| TPE-OVM PP 80A Firm | 80A | Firm support, edge protection, good scratch resistance | Smoother, less tacky feel | 2-shot / insert | Knobs, edge guards, functional pads on PP parts |
Note: Grades and hardness are for reference. Final selection depends on PP formulation, mold design and required grip feeling.
Key Advantages of TPE on PP
- Direct bonding to PP – no primer or separate adhesive layer required.
- Design freedom – selective grip zones, ribs and textures on a single PP part.
- Shorter cycle vs. rubber – fully thermoplastic, recyclable, no curing step.
- Good colorability – solid, translucent or multi-color grip designs.
- Comfort and anti-slip – improved ergonomics for daily-use PP products.

Customization Options
- Hardness range: Shore A 30–80 for soft cushions to firm grips.
- System choice: SEBS-based grades for low odor and durability, SBS-based options for cost-sensitive consumer products.
- Surface feel: high-friction “rubbery” grip vs. smoother, silky-touch versions.
- Color matching: brand colors, stripe effects or translucent formulations.
- Adhesion tuning: optimized for your PP grade and mold conditions.
- Processing window: grades tailored for 2-shot or insert overmolding on existing PP tools.
Processing & Recommendations
- Dry TPE compounds at 70–80 °C for 2–3 hours before molding.
- Typical melt temperature: 170–200 °C, depending on hardness and flow requirements.
- For 2-shot molding, ensure PP and TPE contact while the PP surface is still hot and clean.
- For insert molding, keep PP inserts free of dust, release agents and moisture.
- Use adequate venting and gate design to avoid burn marks and flow lines at the interface.
- Adhesion tests (peel / shear) are recommended during tool trials to confirm bonding strength.
Target Markets
- Toothbrush and personal-care handle OEM/ODM producers.
- Manufacturers of kitchenware, utensils and small household tools with PP handles.
- Appliance and small device makers using PP knobs, levers and functional buttons.
- Stationery and office product suppliers needing PP grips and anti-slip areas.
